Bill Attley, FAI Chief Referee Observer, who accompanied John on many of his international appointments commented that John was the best referee Ireland has produced. Bill said that John was entrusted with major matches by UEFA because he was totally fearless in his decision making and was incorruptible at a time when bribery of match officials was a serious issue for UEFA. He also refereed 15 full international matches between 1970 and 1983 John’s biggest disappointment was not making the Referee Panel for the 1974 World Cup in West Germany. He was selected as a reserve referee. When the North American Soccer League was launched John was one of a small number of top European referees who were invited to officiate in the USA. Many world famous players including Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Cruyff and George Best played in the NASL at this time to promote soccer to the American public.
